Review: Ramblow 1.00 for S60 3rd & 5th, memory management fresh air for fragile firmware

Nokia N97 and N97 Mini users who possess branded handsets that have not yet received the awaited 21 Firmware upgrade can sleep a little easier tonight with the release of Ramblow 1.0, a memory management and maintenance application just released.  Don't get me wrong.  This app is great for any phone, but particularly useful for anyone running a newish device with young firmware that still has bugs, memory leaks, and memory optimization yet to be done by the manufacturer.

Think of it like the Open Apps list that also shows what apps have previously been run and not shut down properly, how much memory everything is taking up, and with manual and/or automatic janitorial services built in., to keep things running smoothly

You can schedule memory cleanup to occur at set intervals after so much idle time (Mine's set to 30 min), manually terminate unwanted apps from running, see how much memory each app is using, add favorite apps, or apps you want to be untouched by the cleanup process to a safe list, and more.

Unlike other memory managers that attempt to dump previously used caches of memory only, but still leave multiple instances of built-in services such as Messaging, Menu, etc. running, Ramblow cleans it ALL out, usually regaining 3-5mb of memory each time it runs.  And because it continues to run periodically, you will continue to have a well-responding device, rather than the "one-off" blast from apps like Memory Up.

Being visually impaired, I use a RAM-hungry screen reader to read function keys, emails, web, etc. on my phone.  I also listen to a lot of media such as audiobooks, and videos on the N97.  Prior to installing Ramblow, the phone would become very laggy after several hours of use, eventually resulting in my reseting it out of frustration (and sometimes necessity!).

But post-Ramblow install, my device is always snappy and fresh.  I think it just made my top 5 list for 2010, and we're only in February!

One thing that's missing is the ability to have Ramblow run automatically at startup.  Once you do run it, it stays running, but it makes sense for an app whose main purpose is to keep a phoen running crisply all the time, to offer the choice of having it running all the time, doesn't it?  Still, there's no denying its worthiness, and I've no doubt it will have a couple of added features in the next release.

** Addendum added 8 Feb 2010 — After running this for a few days, I've never been happier with the N97.  It's as fresh after 3 days of being on, as it was at startup.  I don't think I'll wait for the demo to run out...I'm off to buy it now. — Ted **

Here's another tool for my "best of" list of the year. And it's not a brand new app, either. Already at version 2.00, this is one of those programs that proves useful, not only because of what it can do, but because it fills a glaring hole in other people's apps as well.
