Review: PowerBoot 2.00 for S60 3rd & 5th edition
Review: PowerBoot for S60 3rd & 5th Edition
By Ted Mc from BlindMind.netI know it may seem sometimes like we only give positive reviews. Trust me when I say that there will be some criticism coming on those apps that miss the mark, but I guess I've chosen to get things started by looking at those products that are most useful for users.
Here's another tool for my "best of" list of the year. And it's not a brand new app, either. Already at version 2.00, this is one of those programs that proves useful, not only because of what it can do, but because it fills a glaring hole in other people's apps as well.
What sparked the review of this product was the one feature missing in another product reviewed here recently called Ramblow, a memory management application that is particularly useful on devices where system memory/RAM is lacking to begin with, especially coupled with young firmware that still has some imperfections in its memory management. See our review of Ramblow for more.
In talking with a friend of mine who also enjoys Ramblow, and in the review, the discussion turned towards what else would have been nice for them to include on the feature list, which was the option to have the program load at device startup. It seemed to both of us very strange that someone would make such a wonderful program, designed to keep your phone running smoothly by automatically terminating apps & processes left running in memory, but not include the option of having it run all the time.
The perfect solution to this dilemma is PowerBoot. A wonderfully simple application whose sole goal in life is to maintain a list of programs you add to it that will then run when the device starts. This includes not only installed apps, but system apps and processes as well including, but not limited to, Web, New Message, File Manager, and at least on my N97, another 160+ selections!
To sweeten the deal to a "can't resist" proposition, the app is completely FREE, and is only 23 kilobytes, making it definitely small enough to go ahead and install on your phone's C: drive. The Options list of PowerBoot features the ability to add an installed app to the startup list, remove (if you have already added one), add a running app, or add a Java MIDlet to the startup list.
Besides the main startup list tab sheet, it also features very handy additional tab sheets showing a list of all installed apps, another, similar to the Windows "processes" tab of the ctrl-alt-delete screen on a PC listing all running system apps & processes (which you can select any of to add to your startup list, but recommend you know what you're doing, as they are not just items like Messaging or Web, but all the mini-processes a phone requires to work), and a separate tab sheet for Java, again, for advanced users.
The one improvement I'd like to see is the ability to run an application at startup, but leave the ome screen in the foreground, or the equivalent on a computer of starting an application minimized. But that's just me being picky. For a free product that is so tiny and yet so useful, the developer, Wireless Labs, has done a wonderful job, and you can find it below.

I have always been a nokia fan but have recently been converted to the iPhone. However, two things about the iPhone frustrate me.
1. It has a great application called MobileMe but it costs $99. And, if like me, you made the mistake in using the free trial, once its done and you say "no thanks", you lose everything you loaded in to it, like all your contacts.
2. The apps that you can get for it you have to keep updating if you want them to continue to work.
AND, it doesn't have a c drive!
I love my iPhone but I miss the functionality of my nokia phones.
