Review:  VI Scientific's Currency Identifier (and more) "Vision Hunt" for S60 3rd & 5th edition

Just like many other Blind and/or Visually impaired people, I am always interested in hearing about new developments in the mobile phone markets, especially when these innovations continue to bring greater efficiency and potential increases to our independence! I'm also a HUGE fan of having one gadget to efficiently cover all my needs rather than needing to lug about a sack full of electronics and a Batman style utility belt! So I was very interested to hear recently about the latest developments in phone  camera utilisation apps.

This latest offering is a clever little application called VisionHunt developed by a company called VI Scientific, it comes in 3 flavours, Colour identification, Currency identification (Currently for Euro, US Dollar and polish zlotty) and of course a Full all encompassing version to cover both in one app - all 3 versions also include light source and light level detection functionality.

The app supports Symbian 3rd Edition devices and worked very well on my N95 8GB, it is also compatible with 5th Edition Symbian devices although currently it is not yet optimised for touch functionality (so only currently going to be suited for those Hybrid type 5th Ed devices with a physical slide out keyboard such as the N97, N97 Mini etc) it should also shortly be available for Windows mobile, the IPhone and hopefully some further development will see optimisation for 5th Edition touchscreen Symbian devices so it is not restricted to just the Hybrid 5th ed phones and also hopefully support for additional currencies such as British Pounds will follow soon too.

Definitely an app for people to check out and have a play with, for the N95 8GB it worked perfectly "out of the box" but for those devices with a lower (or even higher) quality camera spec it includes additional optimisation settings to ensure you get the best outcome each time - you get to trial 100 times before you choose to part with your cash and I'm reliably informed that they will shortly be reducing the pricing down to the lower double figure level, so as making this clever and useful application very affordable to the majority of people.

Check it out, it could be your latest additional section to your Swiss army knife that is your phone, if we had a modern day version of MacGyver this would totally be part of his independent Swiss army knife (phone) app installation!
